Parenting Teens-5 Common Mistakes Of Parents
These are some mistakes that parents make. So learn it the hard way. And for others here is the guide. This has been compiled after taking to many parents with teens.
The five gravest mistakes of parents:
Mistake No. 1 – Don’t talk much but LISTEN. Many parents just talk and don’t want to listen to what the teens have to say. This is wrong. They also have a right to express themselves.
Solution: Listen to them, take out time, and stop whatever you are up to. Make them feel that you are always there for them whenever they want you. Sometimes they would want the other person just to listen and not give suggestions.
Mistake No. 2 - Busy Parents – Some parents assume and complete the sentences themselves without giving the teens to speak out themselves.
Solution: Let them complete what they have to say. Don’t always give solutions, instead listen to them. When they feel they are listened to, they feel important and respected.
Mistake No. 3 – the dreaded word ‘Should’ – it is a word that makes one feel that they are forced to do it with or without their consent. Perturbed teenagers become fuming adults.
Solution: Use words like ’please’ & ‘Thank you’ more often with your children. Don’t make them feel that you are ordering them to do something. Instead make it a request. Like instead of should u can say ’CAN’.
Mistake No. 4 – Over-Protective Parents – Protecting your chill whenever and by however mean every time is not cool. Children feel suffocated this way. Moreover, how would they learn from their mistakes if you don’t let them be their usual self?
Solution: Allow them to take their own decisions. Obviously you should talk to them about various outcomes and consequences but the ultimate decision whether good or bad should be from their side. How else will they learn from their mistakes?
Mistake No. 5 – Criticizing them – The teens take this in a very wrong way and could end up avoiding you. They feel they are not respected, or you don’t trust them with anything. That escalates into anger.
Solution: When they do things right acknowledge and praise them. Respect and love them for what they are. This makes them respected and happy. They also will start behaving better to get your attention.
